Clara in Venice

Alessandro Longhi (mentioned on object), c. 1751 - c. 1755

Alessandro Longhi uses his father’s paintings – albeit less aptly – for an etching of Clara’s visit. In the print, too, Clara is munching hay, has defecated, is being gaped at by the audience and her horn is held up. Sometimes so many people come to see Clara that he becomes restless, and therefore dangerous. The caption mistakenly notes that Clara hails from Africa instead of South Asia.
