Cigar chest

Charles-Guillaume Diehl, c. 1867 - c. 1875

Diehl and Fremiet’s eccentric furniture created a great stir at the Exposition Universelle of 1867 in Paris. This cigar box consists of quasi-medieval masonry in wood, and monster heads, dragons and snakes in silvered bronze. The crowned salamander withstanding the flames refers to another period: it was a personal emblem of the 16th-century French king François I.

    Sigarendoos in trapeziumvorm, die aan vier zijden is voorzien van verzilverd metalen voorstellingen met fantasievolle draken, slangen, en salamanders. De onderrand vertoont een verbreding, die aan de hoeken voorzien is van cirkels, met een verzilverd montuur. De bovenkant is voorzien van geschulpte verzilverde details, die in een kruis over het deksel lopen. In het midden hiervan bevindt zich een knop in de vorm van dierenkoppen.
