Getting started with the collection:
Ciborium
design: Johannes Ludovicus Mattheus Lauweriks (1864-1932), Hagen, 1912, made by Verein Hagener Silberschmiede under the direction, of Frans Zwollo, 1912–July 1914, opal, silver
This ciborium – a vessel used in Christian worship for the consecrated bread – depicts the interaction between man and the universe with pentagons, triangles andspirals. Lauweriks was following the Theosophical tenet that every philosophy of life contains a fragment of the divine mystery. Lauweriks therefore chose opals, which reflect light in a thousand colours; as many as there are human interpretations of the divine.
