Christ Healing the Sick (‘Hundred Guilder Print’)

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1648

This masterpiece shows Rembrandt at the height of his powers. In an utterly original fashion, he condenses a chapter in the Bible by grouping all of the figures around Christ, rich and poor, young and old, healthy and sick alike. In so doing, he achieved unprecedented nuances in grey tonalities, from velvety black, through grey, to almost white.
