Christ as the Man of Sorrows

attributed to Ludovico Begarelli, c. 1530

This impressive bust was originally part of a full-length statue of the Risen Christ, which showed his wounds. Such monumental and realistic portrayals in terracotta were a speciality of Antonio Begarelli, who was considered one of the most important sculptors of his time in this medium.

    De kop van het halverwege de bovenarm afgesneden borstbeeld hangt voorover naar links. Het gescheiden haar valt in golvende lokken langs de slapen en over schouders en rug. Het gelaat vertoont snor en tweepuntige baard, half geloken ogen, die omlaag zien en een ten dele geopende mond, waarin tanden en tong zichtbaar zijn.
