Christ and a Group of Women on a Staircase (Christ with Mary and Martha)

Schiavone, 1541 - 1544

The Venetian artist Schiavone confidently scratched his compositions in the copper plate. When pulling the prints, he deliberately left a layer of ink on the plate (plate tone). His unpolished way of working won the admiration of artists and art lovers. The Rijksmuseum has only a small number of his 133 prints. This splendid impression of one of his most successful works is therefore a welcome addition to the collection.
