Chest and dish
attributed to Willem Kick, 1618
In 1609 the Amsterdam entrepreneur Willem Kick applied for a patent for the production of ‘all manner of lacquerware, like that brought in from the East Indies.’ Because original lacquer (obtained from an Asian tree species) could not be imported, Kick developed his own method. Using this, he could imitate costly Japanese lacquerwork on both wood and metal.
