Chest

anonymous, c. 1680 - c. 1700

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Ceylon was renowned for its small, splendidly carved objects in wood and ivory. Wherease the large flowers derive in part from indigenous Asian decorative motifs, they were adapted to suit the taste of Dutch patrons. This little chest is comparable to the one depicted in the lap of one of the Cnoll daughters in the family portrait on view above.

    Juwelenkoffertje met bolle deksel, zilveren scharnieren, slot en, aan weerszijden, hengsels. Het koffertje is geheel versierd met symmetrisch ingesneden bloemmotieven. De scharnieren en het slot zijn eveneens versierd met bloemmotieven.
