Chatelaine with cachet and watch key

Marchand Fils, Firma, c. 1775 - c. 1800

Gold pocket watches were initially hung from a plain ribbon attached to the waistband of a skirt or trousers. In the second half of the 18th century, the ribbons were replaced by chatelaines with smooth belt hooks worn at the waist. The solid gold plates, ornamented with various scenes, are eye catchers. Hanging from this chatelaine are a small decorative item (a cachet) and a watch key.
