Chain of the Order of St Michael with Case

anonymous, anonymous, anoniem, anoniem, 1662

When is something a necklace and when is it a chain? Societies, such as orders of knights, guilds or municipal governments, often presented their leaders or important members with a chain, bestowing power and authority on the wearer. This one belonged to Cornelis Lampsins, whose colonial venture in Tobago earned him membership of the Order of Saint Michael in France.
