Caricatures of the French clergy under Louis XIV

Jacob Gole, 1670 - 1724

Cornelis Dusart and Jacob Gole collaborated on these two series of virulent anti-Catholic caricatures. This series consists of more than fifty prints of monks and nuns who embody sinful behaviour, vice and abuses within the Catholic Church. The heads (no portraits of historical individials but caricatures) exhibit attributes and traces of gluttony, heavy drinking, false piety and lust.

    Een monnik met een papieren hoed, verkleed als prins carnaval. Hij drinkt uit een flesje. Op zijn borst een bord met de tekst "Indulgence pleiniere". De prent maakt deel uit van een serie met karikaturen van de Franse geestelijkheid onder Lodewijk XIV.

Explanatory note

  • De prent verscheen in de bundel "Renversement de la Morale Chrétienne par les désordres du Monachisme". Volgens Wiebke Schmoldt (1997) verscheen deze bundel tussen 1693 en 1700.
