Calvary

Claus Sluter, c. 1390 - c. 1410

The artist who made this Calvary (Crucifixion) was one of the greatest innovators of medieval art, Claus (‘Claes’) Sluter of Haarlem. As court sculptor to the Duke of Burgundy, he introduced an unprecedented realism to sculpture around 1400. Moreover, in this Crucifixion he incorporated all kinds of special motifs, such as the tree cross and the lioness with her cubs, a symbol of Christ’s resurrection.
