Calligraphy Triptych
Yamaoka Tesshū, c. 1870 - c. 1888
The calligraphic poems of this triptych sing of peace and sincerity to better the world. Tesshu, Kaishu, and Deishu were high-ranking samurai in the shogun’s regime. When the shogunate fell in 1868, they made a concerted effort to have this transpire without bloodshed. They were accomplished calligraphers and frequently collaborated as ‘the three Shu’.
