Butterflies
Alida Withoos (signed by artist), 1670 - 1730
This sheet likely belonged to a larger set of drawings depicting specimens in a natural history collection. Withoos arranged the butterflies loosely, ‘flying’ in different directions and with enough space in between to suggest potential movement. In the 17th century, natural history collections often displayed their contents in such a lively constellation.
