Deze prent werd reeds in 1751 (Gersaint) aangeduid als ‘La Mauresse blanche’, en in 1755 (De Burgy) als ‘Het Moorinnetje’. Vrijwel zeker gaat dit terug op een oudere traditie, die lang stand hield. Nog in 1810 (Josi) heette ze ‘Het witte Moorinnetje’. Stellig is de vrouw niet wit, maar lijkt dat zo omdat haar gezicht niet is gearceerd. De paradoxale titel heeft wel tot verwarring geleid. In 1796 duidde Daulby de prent aan als ‘a morisco’, waar hij aan toevoegde: “the face of this woman is the character of a Moor, but her complexion is fair”.
