Budai Monk

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, c. 1715

This figurine, inspired by Chinese soapstone figures, was a very popular product of the Meissen porcelain factory. They were known as ‘pagodas’, after the Buddhist temples with which they were associated. Margarethe and Franz Oppenheimer originally had more than thirty of these Budai figures in their collection.

Description
Figuur van onbeschilderd porselein. de figuur stelt een zittende figuur (pagode) voor. Zijn rechterhand ligt op zijn opgetrokken rechterknie. De linkerhand ligt naast het liggende linkerbeen, waarvan de voet onder het andere been is verstopt. Een kleed laat de schouders, de borst, de buik, de handen en de rechtervoet bloot. De man is kaal en heeft zijn mond geopend, zodat zijn tanden zichtbaar zijn. Het beeld is niet gemerkt.
