Peasants before Diego Rivera’s fresco of the Mexican revolutionary Zapata

Ed van der Elsken, 1960

Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919) is a national legend in Mexico. At the beginning of the 20th century he led the resistance against the major landowners and the dictator who ruled the country. While Van der Elsken has surprisingly little to say about Zapata in his accompanying text in Sweet Life, he must have sympathized with his forceful personality and fight against injustice.
