De bloedvlekken en de handtekening zijn met het blote oog niet zichtbaar maar door fotografie wel.

inscription: ‘The upper illustration is a photograph of a portion of a handerchief from which some blood-stains had been washed out with soap and water, so that they were quite invisible to the eye. The photograph reveals their presence. The lower illustration is a photograph of part of an old French document from which the signature had disappeared. The camera saw what the eye could not see. (See chap. xiii.)’
