Beugel Chair
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, 1927
The fibreboard used in the first models of the Beugel Chair (adjacent) proved unsuitable for large-scale production. Rietveld therefore switched to plywood, which could also be painted more easily. Rietveld’s Beugel Chair, a dining chair, was the first piece of tubular steel furniture to be manufactured commercially in the Netherlands. From 1931 several variants of the design were sold by Metz & Co department store.
