Bentheim Castle

Jacob Isaacksz van Ruisdael, 1650 - 1682

Bentheim Castle still exists. It is located on the German–Dutch border region, but the high mountains Ruisdael depicted in this painting are not found there. Fantasy and reality are interwoven in this scene. The painter made a dozen paintings of this castle, each with a different mountain landscape. In 1861, Goethe, the famous German writer, rightly called Ruisdael a poet.
