Bellowing Bull

attributed to Artus Quellinus (I), c. 1640

Artists not only drew from living models, but also made clever use of bronze or terracotta statuettes. This way the animal could be drawn from various angles, without the artist having to leave his workshop. This impressive bronze was made in Antwerp and must have been extremely popular. A number of replicas of it were made.
