Beech Tree
Frank Brangwyn (Sir) (signed by artist), 1920
Brangwyn and his wife purchased a house in the village of Ditchling in East-Sussex in the beginning of 1918. He drew this gigantic beech tree in nearby Worthing Forest directly on the etching plate. The figures in the landscape are striking: a man with a donkey, a woman with a child. Did Brangwyn, a devout man, want to depict a 20th-century Rest on the Flight into Egypt here?
