Beaker with a satire on the Pope

anoniem, 1604

Who leads us to salvation? The Pope of Rome, richly attired and mounted on horseback, or Christ, wearing rags and riding a scrawny donkey? For the beaker’s Protestant owner, the answer was self-evident, as the caustic inscription on it makes clear: as the servant of God, the Pope should wear rags.
