Baluster

anonymous, c. 1635 - c. 1640

This is part of a balustrade, a low fence or barrier. It stood in Huis ten Bosch Palace, the summer residence of Prince Frederick Henry and his wife Amalia of Solms. There it served as a screen for the state bed. In order to obtain the best lacquerwork, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) had to search in Japan for lacquerers who could not only carry out such a large commission, but also work on an object that was completely unknown in Japan.
