Armchair of a guild of Saint George

The flourishing of civic militia companies testifies to the growing power of ordinary citizens. Each guild had its own building, the doelen. This chair stood in the doelen of a guild of crossbowmen, as can be seen from the crossbow depicted on its back. From which town it came is unknown. The patron saint of crossbowmen was Saint George.

  • Description

    Armstoel van notenhout. Het meubel rust op slanke vaasvormige poten die onderaan door rechthoekige sporten verbonden worden. De platte armleggers zijn geschulpt en eindigen in voluten. De open rug heeft een onderregel en een dwarsregel. Als bekroning dient een los opgezette, gestoken versiering in de vorm van een gebroken fronton. De versiering bestaat uit acanthusbladeren, peulvruchten en een aan een lint opgehangen wapenschild met voetboog, ankerkruizen en sterren. Afkomstig van een St. Jorisgilde.
