Armchair

anonymous, c. 1795

This armchair was made in China after a model that was popular in England at the end of the 18th century. The Chinese furniture-maker probably relied on a print as his source of inspiration. It was commissioned by Van Braam Houckgeest, whose initials are on the back of the chair.

    Armstoel met een ovale gewelfde rugleuning en een matten zitting. De middenplank is opengewerkt in de vorm van een lier met een wapenschild waarin de letters VBH (Van Braam Houckgeest) in reliëf zijn aangebracht. Op de rugleuning, de armrusten en de armstutten een parelrand; gecanneleerde voorpoten en rozetten boven de poten.
