Apollo

attributed to Jan van Logteren, c. 1700 - c. 1715

Jan van Logteren learned his trade as a sculptor under his father Ignatius and became a popular artist. Here Apollo is identified by his laurel crown. The sun god once stood alongside a figure of Aurora, the dawn goddess, in the garden of a house on Amsterdam’s Nieuwe Herengracht.

Description
Op een vierkante plint staat de naakte jongeling op het linkerbeen en met het rechter gebogen. Zijn hoofd is geheel naar links gewend. Hij houdt de linkerhand op een boomstronk, die achter hem staat en heeft in de rechter de boog, waaromheen de mantel is gedrapeerd. Op het hoofd een lauwerkrans, voor de schaamte een bebladerde tak behorend tot de achter hem staande boomstronk. Het voetstuk heeft op elk der vier zijden een verdiept paneel.
