Angel with the Arma Christi

Arnt van Zwolle, c. 1480

Master Arnt was the most important late 15th-century woodcarver in the German-Dutch border area. He carved this angel dressed as a deacon (assistant to the priest during Mass) in a choir robe. The angel holds an armoured helmet adorned with Christ’s crown of thorns and his shirt. These are some of the Arma Christi, the symbolic instruments of Christ’s Passion.

Description
Op een plint met concave zijden staat hij met linkerbeen naar voren gebogen, heeft het hoofd iets naar links en voorover tegengesteld aan de richting van het bovenlichaam. Op de linkerhand, die onder de koormantel schuilgaat, houdt hij een toernooihelm, die hij met de rechterhand steunt en waarop als helmteken Christus' hemd en doornenkroon. De engel heeft om de uitstaande lokken een gewonden parelband met kleinood. Hij draagt amict en albe, welke laatste om het middel is gegord, waardoor een deel van de linkervoet vrijkomt. De koormantel met een kwast aan de kap en met franje aan de zoom is op de rechterbovenarm teruggeslagen en hangt tevens in een grote plooi tussen arm en middel.
