An Audience with Death

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (mentioned on object), in or before c. 1735

A group of young and old people has happened upon Death, as if by accident. Is Death reading to them from the book he holds? His audience seems slightly startled rather than shocked. Only the dog appears to grasp the gravity of the situation: its hackles are raised in fear.
