De gierigaard achter de tafel met de gouden munten en juwelen personifieert de Avaritia of 'hebzucht'. De allegorische figuren naast hem representeren de zaken die zijn verlangen naar goud aanwakkeren, zoals kostbare kleding en mooie vrouwen. Achter de vrek staat een duivel.
