Advertisement Photographs of Socks and Shoes

Ch. Vanderauwera (mentioned on object), c. 1872

This is a rare early example of advertising photography, a genre that only fully came into its own in the 20th century. The book is a curious mishmash of entirely unrelated small advertising photographs and large topographical pictures. Most of the advertisers were established in Brussels, however the title refers to spas and sea bathing in Belgium. The book will thus have been intended for tourists.
