A Woman with a Young Man Disguised

attributed to Kitao Masanobu, c. 1780 - in or before 1816

A young man dressed as a mendicant monk (komuso) lowers his straw hat to identify himself to a woman. The customary dress of these monks, including a black kimono and large basket-shaped hat covering the entire head, made for a perfect disguise, for instance when secretly visiting one’s lover.
