A Rearing Horse before a Landscape

Hercules Segers, c. 1618 - c. 1622

A fierce rearing horse towers above a tiny strip of landscape. Segers based this depiction of an animal – the only one he made! – on a print after a design by the Italian artist Antonio Tempesta.
