A Girl with Flowers on the Grass

Jacob Maris (mentioned on object), 1878

A girl in a white dress, viewed from the side, is sitting on the grass holding a bouquet of wild flowers. The blue of the flowers is echoed in the bow in her hair and her shoes. It was probably one of Maris’s daughters who modelled for this idyllic scene. The atmosphere and the style of painting recalls the work of 19th-century French Impressionists such as Claude Monet and veers away from Maris’s usual grey palette.
