Screen with a VOC ship and a Chinese junk. Genkei school, Nagasaki, 1759. There was considerable demand in Nagasaki for pictures of foreigners. Nagasaki was the only place in Japan where foreigners were allowed to live. Chinese and Dutch merchants were able to trade with Japan from bases on two artificial islands in Nagasaki Bay. Some of the Japanese artists in the harbour city specialised in depictions of foreigners and, as on this screen, of foreign ships.
