In 1830 she accompanied the South Holland militia on the Ten Days’ Campaign to the Southern Netherlands. This conflict ultimately led to the founding of the independent state of Belgium. Sutlers performed essential military services, but rarely fought alongside the soldiers. They did however face the same severe hardships associated with warfare in this time. Vrouw Schoonderwoert’s hat and the container she used to provide soldiers with drink are preserved in the Rijksmuseum.
