These people were then shipped off to unfamiliar locations around the world. They were put to work on plantations, in the households of slave owners, or building forts and city walls. While systems of slavery varied with local situations around the world, at their core they were identical in that they treated human beings as objects on the basis of their skin colour or beliefs. Enslaved people have always resisted and fought against this system in a variety of ways, from small acts of sabotage to marronage (escaping the plantation system) to combating the entire enterprise of slavery.
