In the Netherlands, these diplomats, mariners, soldiers and servants became part of Dutch society. Although they occasionally appear in work by artists of the time, as far as we know they never commissioned these paintings themselves. A consequence of this is that while we can see their faces, the names their parents gave them remain unknown in almost all cases.
