The Resurrection and the Three Maries at the Tomb

The woodcarver here combined in one scene two separate episodes from the Passion of Christ: his resurrection from the tomb, and the three women – Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of Jesus and Mary Salome – who went to the tomb (shown at centre) to embalm his body. A Roman soldier is asleep in front of the tomb.

Description
Op oplopend grondje staat diagonaalsgewijs de tombe met het dwars daarover geplaatste deksel. Christus stapt met rechterbeen uit graf. Achter hem op het deksel twee slapende soldaten. Weer daarachter de drie wenende Maria's (van één ontbreekt het hoofd), van wie twee elk een pot met zalf vasthouden. Geheel rechts op hoek deksel een engel en op voorgrond nog een slapende soldaat met opgeheven vuist.
