Description

Zoals het opschrift onderaan vermeldt is het onderwerp van deze schildering de maand mei. Het teken van het sterrenbeeld Tweelingen is afgebeeld op een reliëf met een zwart fond. Het gezicht met de kransen van laurierbladeren en zonnestralen is van Apollo, onder wiens bescherming mei staat. Pijl en boog vormen Apollo’s favoriete wapen, de lier is zijn lievelingsinstrument en de verschillende soorten fluiten verwijzen naar zijn rol als beschermgod van muziek. De leeuw wordt met Apollo geassocieerd omdat dit dier de zon symboliseert. Deze schildering maakt deel uit van een serie pilasterpanelen (sk-a-4142 t/m sk-a-4150), gemaakt in opdracht van Josephus Augustus Brentano (1753-1821) voor zijn huis Herengracht 544.
