Description

Zoals het opschrift onderaan vermeldt is het onderwerp van deze schildering de maand februari. Het teken van het sterrenbeeld vissen is afgebeeld op een reliëf met een zwart fond. De boot is mogelijk ontleend aan door Claude III Audran (1658-1734) omstreeks 1709 ontworpen tapijtenserie Le Douze Mois Grotesques, die door Jean Audran (1667-1756) in prent is gebracht. Op de prent met de eerste twee maanden is bij februari een vergelijkbare boot te zien. In plaats van Neptunes, de beschermgod van februari, toont de schildering de zeegod Okeanos. Hij is te herkennen aan zijn lange baard en horens en is zoals gebruikelijk omringd door de slangen en vissen. Deze schildering maakt deel uit van een serie pilasterpanelen (sk-a-4142 t/m sk-a-4150), gemaakt in opdracht van Josephus Augustus Brentano (1753-1821) voor zijn huis Herengracht 544.
