Portrait of Johannes Lutma, Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, 1638 - 1651

Portrait of Johannes Lutma, Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, 1638 - 1651

oil on panel, h 91cm × w 71cm. More details

Like the jar of punches and the chasing hammer in the silversmith’s hand, the partially gilded silver salt cellar in the bottom right corner indicates the subject’s profession. Johannes Lutma was one of Amsterdam’s leading precious metal workers. Several salt cellars by Lutma similar to the one depicted here have survived. Backer probably portrayed Lutma in the year he joined the board of his guild.
