The Adoration of the Shepherds, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1652 - 1656
In 1654 Rembrandt also produced six smaller etchings of scenes from Christ’s childhood. They are all done in the same open style, with firmly incised etched lines. The shading consists primarily of close parallel lines. The Virgin is shown seated in the glow of an oil lamp. She raises her cloak to proudly show the newborn Christ Child to the shepherds who have gathered around her.
