Ephraim Bueno

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1647

It is striking that the etched portrait of Bueno shows more of his surroundings than the painted preparatory study. Rembrandt went to great lengths to translate the oil sketch’s dark tonalities into the print. Yet he clearly distinguishes the figure from the background. The stairs in the left foreground serve as one of the bright spots in the composition.
