Drie monsters van bliksemafleiders voor schepen in de vorm van koperdraad, alle kabelslag. De twee dunne bestaan uit vijf garens ieder, één met een koperen ring aan een eind; de dikkere donderketting bestaat uit drie strengen van vijf garens en het perkamenten etiket de signatuur van Asmus is eraan bevestigd.

During the 19th century this model of an 18th- century East Indiaman was fitted with an emergency foremast and lightning conductors by J.P. Asmus. The Dutch East India Company had no ship called Vergelijking (Comparison) in its service. The name suggests that the model may have been intended to illustrate new ship-building techniques.

Entry

Three samples of lightning conductors for ships.

All three are copper cables and all are cable-laid. The two thin ones consist of five strands, one has a copper ring at the end. The thick conductor chain consists of three strands of five yarns each and has a parchment label attached to it with Jochem Pietersz Asmus’s signature.

In his catalogue of 1858 Obreen mentions that the three samples are for different charters of ships and are made according to older specifications.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 601. It remains unclear whether the samples were made or procured by Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837). The model of the East Indiaman Vergelijking (NG-MC-658) was rigged with similar lighting conductors.
