Chess Set

Georg Fuhg, 1941

This chess set glorifies Nazi Germany’s urge to conquer. The pieces are shaped like weapons and the text in the border refers to countries occupied by Germany in 1939 and 1940. The chess set was made by a German soldier, artist Georg Fuhg from Königsberg, who was stationed in the Netherlands. It was shown in 1941 at the exhibition Kunst der Front organized by the German occupier in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

    Compleet schaakspel met bijbehorende kist. Het schaakbord is van hout en aardewerk met 2 x 16 witte en bruine schaakstukken van aardewerk. De schaakstukken hebben een militaire vorm: de pionnen zijn infanteristen; in het geval van de witte partij is de toren een 'Flak' (Flugzeug Abwehr Kanone - luchtafweergeschut); het paard is een motorrijder; de loper een jachtvliegtuig (type Junker Ju 87, de zogenaamde Stuka (Sturzkampfflugzeug)), koning en koningin zijn luchtgranaten. In geval van de bruine partij is het paard een ruiter. De loper is een jachtvliegtuig (geen Stuka). De koning is een tank. In de rand rondom het schaakveld staat de volgende tekst: 1939 SCHACH-MATT POLEN . DENEMARK . NORWEGEN . HOLLAND . BELGIEN . FRANKREICH . ENGLAND U.S.W.

Explanatory note

  • Het schaakspel is hoogstwaarschijnlijk afkomstig uit het kantoor van de NSB (Nationaal Socialistische Beweging) aan de Maliebaan, Utrecht. Het zou afkomstig zijn van Partijleider Anton Mussert, die het ten geschenke zou hebben gekregen van SS-leider Heinrich Himmler, mogelijk tijdens een bezoek aan München en omgeving in 1941.
