These salt cellars showcase the artistic influences Johannes Lutma absorbed while in Rome in 1630. Already in Roman antiquity, children were a favourite motif in sculpture, new variants of which sculptors developed in Lutma’s time. Lutma, too, created his own version, incorporating it into his salt cellars. The figure of the child follows the classical idiom, skilfully combined with fanciful auricular ornaments adorning the pedestal and bowl.

Description

De zoutvaten (A en B) zijn opgebouwd uit een gegoten voetstuk en stam en een gedreven schaal. Het driehoekige, hoog oplopende vergulde voetstuk is geheel versierd met grillige, weke ornamenten, waaronder opengesperde muilen. Deze zijn in het bijzonder zichtbaar aan de basis van de poten, waarvan de onderzijde is vormgegeven als een gestileerde kikker. De stam heeft de vorm van een jongen, zittend op een dolfijn met een omhoog geslagen, gedraaide staart, die over een van de schouders van het kind valt. Bij A ondersteunt de jongen de schaal met zijn opgeheven rechterhand, terwijl hij in de vooruitgestoken linkerhand een schelp houdt. Bij B ondersteunt hij de schaal met zijn linkerhand, terwijl hij in de rechter een koraaltak houdt. Het hoofd van beide kinderen is getooid met gebladerte. De ovale, verdiepte vergulde schaal heeft een brede, licht gebolde rand die versierd is met grillige ornamenten, waaronder plooien waaruit weekdiertjes steken. Het verdiepte gedeelte is door middel van gebogen lijnen in twee helften verdeeld en doet denken aan een geopende schelp. Eén korte zijde is hoog opgedreven en lijkt op de opengesperde muil van een zeemonster.
