The Sampling Officials of the Amsterdam Drapers’ Guild, Known as ‘The Syndics’ oil on canvas, 1662
It looks as though these syndics ─ men who inspected the quality of dyed fabrics ─ were caught off-guard in the midst of a meeting. They are painted in a way that a camera might capture them today, gazing right at us and one man is just sitting down. A fine sample of Rembrandt’s genius.
