Water Terrace with Statues and Fountains in a Park

Isaac de Moucheron, 1700 - 1744

In this idealized, symmetrical garden, your eye is led past a pond with sphinx-shaped spouts and majestic triumphal arches to a fountain with the sea god Neptune seated in his chariot pulled by four horses. The painter De Moucheron created this work for Amsterdam’s Hortus Botanicus. The plants in the foreground near the balustrade are from South Africa and the Canary Islands and could be found as well in the botanical garden.
