Merry Company of Three Boys with a Violin
Jacob Gole (mentioned on object), 1670 - 1724
The boy seems to be holding the violin somewhat peculiarly; however, at the time the instrument was placed against the chest, shoulder or upper arm and not clasped under the chin as it is today. Considering the beer glass in the hand of the boy at the back and the tobacco pipe on the table, the trio’s merriment is not due solely to the music.
